Born in January 1915 in Los Angeles to Dosan Ahn Chang-ho and Helen Ahn, the first married Korean couple to immigrate to the United States (in 1902), she enlisted in the WAVES after the outbreak of the Pacific War in December 1942 and was commissioned as an ensign, becoming the first Asian-American woman commissioned as a U.S. Navy officer and the first woman to serve as a naval gunnery officer. She later worked in codebreaking for the Office of Naval Intelligence and, from 1947, for the agency that became the National Security Agency. She died in 2015 at the age of 100.
