Park Chang-won (1921-1998) was one of roughly 1,400 Korean youths who, after being forcibly mobilized in May 1942 along with about 3,000 others and trained in Busan, arrived at Tanjung Priok port in Java, Indonesia, on 14 September 1942.
Serving as a guard for Allied prisoners of war, he foresaw Japan's defeat and organized a resistance group with fellow Koreans, founding the Goryeo Independence Youth Party on 29 December 1944 at a training facility in Sumowono, Semarang Province. He was arrested for this activity and sentenced to seven years in prison.
