Park Ja-hye, born in Gyeonggi Province, worked as a court lady before receiving a modern education at Sungmyung Girls' School and training as a nurse at the Government-General Hospital's nursing school. When the March 1st Movement broke out in 1919, she was moved by the sight of wounded demonstrators at the hospital and organized the Ganuhoe (Association of Nurse Friends) to lead fellow nurses in street demonstrations and a hospital strike.
After serving time in prison, she went to Beijing to study medicine, where in spring 1920 she met and married the historian Sin Chae-ho. She gave birth to their first son the following year, but in 1922, pregnant with their second child, she was forced by financial hardship to separate from her husband and return to Korea, where she continued supporting his independence activities, including channeling funds to groups such as the Righteous Brotherhood (Uiyeoldan). After Sin Chae-ho died in prison, she raised their two sons alone until her own death in Tianjin, China, in 1943. She was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1990.
