Bak Jong-sik, born in 1911 in Jindo, South Jeolla Province, was a third-year student at Mokpo Public Commercial School when he led a demonstration in Mokpo on November 19, 1929 in solidarity with the Gwangju Student Independence Movement, producing and distributing about 140 Korean flags and leaflets. He was arrested, sentenced to six months' imprisonment for violating the Security Law, and expelled from school, later receiving an honorary diploma in the early 1960s. He died in 1948 and was posthumously awarded a Order of Merit for National Foundation medal in 1993; he was also the father of politician and former National Intelligence Service director Park Jie-won.
