Life & career

Park Sang-jin organized the Korean Restoration Association (Daehan Gwangbokhoe) and served as its commander-in-chief, executing pro-Japanese collaborators before being captured and executed. The association merged the enlightenment-oriented Joseon Restoration of Sovereignty Corps with the former righteous-army Punggi Restoration Corps, raising funds from the wealthy for the independence cause, planning a military academy in Manchuria, and targeting collaborators. By 1916 it had networks across South Chungcheong, Hwanghae, South Jeolla, Seoul, Samcheok, and Incheon. When Park was sentenced to death, his deputy commander Kim Jwa-jin plotted to break him out of Daegu Prison, though the plan was never carried out. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal, in 1963.
