Park Se-hwa (1834-1910), courtesy name Yeon-gil and pen name Uidang, was born in Gowon, South Hamgyong Province, and led the Uidang school of Confucian scholars in the "Four Counties" area of North Chungcheong.
After the Eulmi Incident and the topknot-cutting edict of 1895 intensified Japanese interference, he planned an uprising in the mountains of Mungyeong but was captured at a Japanese military post there. Following the forced 1905 Eulsa Treaty, he raised a righteous army again at Namhyeon but was captured during fighting at Cheongpung.
On hearing of Korea's annexation in 1910, he gathered his disciples and descendants, left his final testament, and died after a 23-day fast, leaving the words "Korea of propriety and righteousness" (禮義朝鮮) as his last message.
