Bak Yeon-baek, born in 1869 in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang Province, raised a righteous army after the 1905 Eulsa Treaty and, in 1906, fought Japanese troops with outdated weapons while raiding the Uiseong town office and a police substation, operating across Uiseong, Uiheung, Yeongcheon, and Cheongsong. In late 1907 he joined forces with the Yeongcheon righteous-army leader for further raids before being forced to disband his unit; he died in Gyeongju in February 1909. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal, in 1963.
