Early Goryeo civil official and scholar who founded the Gujae academy; the "Confucius of the East"

Choe Chung (崔沖, 984-1068) was a civil official and scholar of the early Goryeo period, with the courtesy name Ho-yeon (浩然) and the art name Seongjae (惺齋). His clan lineage was Haeju.
He placed first in the higher civil service examination during King Mokjong's reign, rose to Chancellor (Munha Sijung), and worked to reform statutes and the legal system. After retiring from office, he founded the Gujae private academy to educate the young, and was regarded as the foremost of the Twelve Private Academies (Sahak Sibi-do), earning the name "Confucius of the East (Haedong Gongja, 海東孔子)."
Of the Haeju Choe clan; his son Choe Yu-seon also served as Chancellor (Munha Sijung), and the family produced high officials over many generations.
