Hall of Worthies scholar who submitted a memorial opposing the creation of Hunminjeongeum

Choe Man-ri was a civil official and scholar of the early Joseon period who worked for a long time in scholarly research and education at the Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon), rising to Deputy Director (Bujehak). Renowned for his honest and upright character, he also held provincial posts such as Governor of Gangwon Province.
He is widely known for the incident in 1444 when he submitted a memorial opposing the promulgation of Hunminjeongeum, the script created by King Sejong, citing six reasons. This memorial drew the wrath of King Sejong, and he was briefly imprisoned. His memorial of opposition is regarded as an important source revealing the perceptions of the scholar-officials of the time regarding the creation of Hangeul.
