Life & career

Choe Gwang-wi was the founding ancestor of the Chungnyeolgong branch of the Gyeongju Choe clan, a descendant of the celebrated late-Silla scholar Choe Chi-won.

A grandson of the Goryeo minister Choe Je-an, he was originally named Choe Gwang-hun but was renamed Gwang-wi by the king in recognition of his merit in suppressing Japanese pirate raids during the reign of King Myeongjong. He rose to the senior court rank of naesaryeong and was enfeoffed as Gyerim-buwongun, receiving the posthumous title Chungnyeol ("loyal and valiant").

Descendants

His descendants form the Chungnyeolgong branch of the Gyeongju Choe clan.
