Choe Hyeon-u was the founding ancestor of the Hwasukgong branch of the Gyeongju Choe clan, a lineage descended from the renowned late-Silla scholar-official Choe Chi-won that continues to this day.
He lived during the reign of King Chungsuk of Goryeo as the ninth-generation descendant of Choe Chi-won, serving as an inspector (allyeomsa) of Seohae-do province before rising to the position of Chancellor (munha sijung), which greatly elevated his lineage's standing.
His descendants continued to distinguish themselves: his sixth-generation descendant Choe Hyeong-son served as governor of Jangheung, was named a Merit Subject for Quelling Rebellion, and was posthumously honored as Minister of War, while Choe Hyeong-son's son Choe Han-hong served as a regional military commander and was likewise named a state-founding Merit Subject.
His descendants form the Hwasukgong branch of the Gyeongju Choe clan.
