He led his entire family into exile in Manchuria, where he organized the Gyeonghaksa society together with Yi Sang-ryong and left behind a written record of the anti-Japanese struggle. His clan seat was Uiseong; his courtesy name was Jungeon and his pen name Biseo, but after fleeing to Manchuria he adopted the sobriquet Baekha, meaning "beneath Baekdusan." He was born the eldest son of Kim Jin-rin (1825–1895) in Cheonjeon-ri, Imha-myeon, Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, and was the brother-in-law of Yi Sang-ryong, his co-founder of Gyeonghaksa.
On January 6, 1911, at the age of 66, he left Seoul for exile in West Gando, where he and Yi Sang-ryong founded Gyeonghaksa — the first Korean self-governing body in Manchuria — and Sinheung Gangseupso, a training institute for independence fighters that later became Sinheung Military Academy. He kept a diary of his life and activities in exile from 1911 to 1913, known as the Baekha Diary.
