Heo Hwang-ok is recorded in the Samguk Yusa (Garak-guk gi) as a princess of Ayuta who crossed the sea in 48 CE and became King Suro's queen. Also called Queen Dowager Boju, she is said to have borne ten sons and two daughters, the eldest, King Geodeung, succeeding to the throne. The Gimhae, Yangcheon, Taein and Hayang Heo clans are explained as descending from the two sons who took her surname.
She is said to have died in 188 or 189 at the age of 157. Scholars disagree on whether Ayuta was in India, and the account is often noted as legendary.
