Life & career

Hwang Yu-jeong (1343-1421) was an official of late Goryeo and early Joseon from the Pyeonghae Hwang clan, with the pen name Migyun (米均). He belonged to the Geomgyo-gong line and was the third son among three sons and a daughter of Hwang Geun, an official of the Confucian Academy and Hall of Literature, and a daughter of Ahn Chuk of the Sunheung Ahn clan. Sources number his generation seventh or eighth.

According to the Korean Wikipedia clan entry, at the age of twelve, in 1355, he wrote a poem at a gathering in Andong that so impressed the examiner that he was urged to sit the civil examination. He passed but did not take office at once, preferring to read, and he is said never to have put the Analects down. He held posts such as magistrate and head of the ministries of Rites, Works and Punishments in late Goryeo, and again held the Hanseong mayoralty and similar posts after Joseon was founded. The character 米 in his pen name is explained as expressing the idea that food is heaven for the people.

He married a daughter of Jeong Un-gyeong, a sister of Jeong Do-jeon, and so became Jeong's brother-in-law. He is said not to have been implicated after Jeong's death in 1398 and to have kept his posts. In old age he lived, citing illness, at the Sampanseo Historic House in Yeongju, which his father-in-law Jeong had handed down to him; he in turn passed it to Kim Dam, the Minister of Personnel and second son of his son-in-law Kim So-ryang, so that three ministers lived there, giving the house its name. His tomb is said to be at Duwol-ri, Isan-myeon, Yeongju. His son Hwang Hyeon served as rector of the Seonggyungwan under Sejong.

The Sampanseo Historic House

Said to lie at Duwol-ri, Isan-myeon, Yeongju, North Gyeongsang.
