Life & career

Yi Beom-jik (李範稷, d. 1896) served as a recruiting officer for Yu In-seok's Hojwa Righteous Army and is counted among its "Six Martyrs" (Yuguisa). Dispatched through Chungcheong Province to recruit volunteers, he tracked down and executed the magistrate of Cheonan, Kim Byeong-suk, who had provoked deep popular resentment by ruthlessly enforcing the hair-cutting edict.

Yu In-seok sent Yi Beom-jik and other commanders to various regions to raise troops, strike Japanese supply depots, and punish pro-Japanese officials. After the Hojwa Righteous Army was defeated at the Battle of Jecheon, Yi continued the fight before finally being martyred.
