Yi Dal-saeng (李達生, 1886–1960) was from Hawon-dong, Seogwipo, Jeju Island. On October 5, 1918, he took part in the armed anti-Japanese demonstration at Beopjeongsa Temple, led by monks including Kim Yeon-il, Kang Chang-gyu, and Bang Dong-hwa. He was arrested and, on February 4, 1919, sentenced to one year in prison by the Mokpo branch of the Gwangju District Court for rioting and violating the Security Law.
The Beopjeongsa uprising is regarded as Jeju's first armed anti-Japanese movement; in 2004 a memorial hall, Uiyeolsa, was built to honor the roughly 400 participants and display portraits of the 66 who stood trial. Yi was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriots' Medal, in 1995.
