Lee Gwan-yong served as vice-chair of the Paris Commission of the Provisional Government, appealing for Korean independence on the international stage. Born in 1891 in Jongno, Seoul, the fourth son of Lee Jae-gon, he studied at the University of Zurich and in 1923 earned a doctorate in philosophy, becoming the first Korean to hold a doctorate from a European university and the first to specialize in Western philosophy. He took part in the Korean delegation to the Paris Peace Conference, attended the International Socialist Congress as a representative of the Korean Socialist Party, and also served on the Committee for the Comparative Study of America and Europe (Guhmi Wiwonbu).
