Yi Jae-geuk (1864-1927), a distant royal cousin of Emperor Gojong, entered government service through hereditary privilege in 1879 and passed the civil service examination in 1893, going on to serve as governor of Gyeonggi Province (1900), Minister of Justice (1903), and Minister of Education (1904).
As Minister of the Royal Household during the 1905 Eulsa Treaty, he took part in pressuring Emperor Gojong to accept the protectorate treaty, and after Japan's 1910 annexation of Korea he was made a baron and served as head of the Yi Royal Household Office from 1919 to 1923. In 1908 he co-founded the Dongdeok Uisuk school, forerunner of today's Dongdeok Women's University schools. He was officially designated a pro-Japanese collaborator by the South Korean government in 2007, with his assets ordered confiscated.
