Life & career
Lee Jin-cheol was from Seosu-myeon, Okgu County, North Jeolla Province. When the Japanese-owned colonial agricultural company Iyeopsa imposed excessive rents on tenant farmers at its Seosu farm, he joined the tenant farmers' dispute against it.
In 1927, after officers of the Okgu Farmers' Association were arrested by Japanese police, he and several hundred fellow tenant farmers attacked the Seosu and Impi police substations in an attempt to rescue their detained comrades. He was arrested and punished for this.
