Yi Yeong-sin (李英信, b. 1908) took part in a sympathy strike in support of the Gwangju Student Movement while enrolled at Geunhwa Girls' School in January 1930 and was detained for it. At the time, fourteen schools across Seoul, including Geunhwa Girls' School, joined the sympathy strike, with students from Ewha Womans Professional School, Dongdeok Girls' High School, and other girls' schools participating under the leadership of Heo Jeong-suk and others. For this contribution she was awarded a Presidential Citation in 2019 and recognized as a person of merit for independence.
