Life & career

Kim Al-ji (金閼智) is the founding ancestor of the Gyeongju Kim clan and is handed down as the progenitor of the Silla Kim royal dynasty. According to the Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa, in the time of King Talhae he emerged from a golden chest hanging on the branch of a tree in Gyerim (鷄林) in Gyeongju, and so was given the surname Kim (金, gold).

From among his descendants came the Silla Kim kings, and Silla's last king, King Gyeongsun (Kim Bu), was also of that line. The Gyeongju Kim clan is a representative surname group that carried on the royal surname of Silla's thousand years.

From among his descendants the Silla Kim kings continued, and he became the root of various Kim clans.
