Late Goryeo officer who retook the capital from the Red Turbans and became a merit subject; Lord Hoeseong
| Era | 고려 말 |
| Clan | 장흥 마씨 |
Ma Cheon-rin was a late Goryeo figure of the Jangheung Ma clan. His dates are unknown. Wikipedia says he served as Hallim Academy scholar in 1345, vice-minister of rites in 1351 and governor of Naju under Gongmin. The names of his father and wife and his lineage are not given.
When the Red Turbans seized Gaegyeong in 1361 he retook it in 1362 as Daehogun, earning in 1363 the title of second-class Merit Subject for the Recapture of the Capital. The same year he was recorded as first-class Sinchuk Hojong Merit Subject for escorting the king and queen mother. As a merit subject his parents and wife received titles, his son a seventh-rank post and his descendants eligible office by hereditary privilege, along with 100 gyeol of land and ten slaves.
In later years he served as Pyeongjangsa, Samjung Daegwang and Pansamsa Busa and was ennobled Lord Hoeseong. The Ma Cheon-mok article mentions Ma Cheon-rin as a Sinchuk Hojong merit subject ennobled Lord Hoeseong, treating him as an ancestor of the same line. His exact generational relation to Ma Cheon-mok was not confirmed. Ma Cheon-rin can thus be seen as a military ancestor in the turmoil of late Goryeo, connected to the family tradition that later made Ma Cheon-mok a merit subject. See also Ma Cheon-mok and the Jangheung Ma page.
He is said to have retaken Gaegyeong in 1362 as Daehogun.
