Ma Hyeok-in was a figure of King Munjong's Goryeo reign, introduced as the founding progenitor (gisejo) of the Jangheung Ma. His dates were not confirmed. Korean Wikipedia's Jangheung Ma entry says he passed the civil examination in 1085 and laid the base for the family's revival.
The same entry says that under Munjong Ma Hyeon founded the Mokcheon Ma and Ma Hyeok-in the Jangheung Ma. English Wikipedia also says the Ma line split into Mokcheon and Jangheung, with Hyeon taking Mokcheon and Hyeok-in Jangheung. On that basis the clan sometimes treats Ma Hyeok-in as its gisejo. There is no separate Wikipedia article on him, so his detailed career was not confirmed.
Afterward the Jangheung Ma passed through Ma Hui-won and Ma Jung-gi and rose greatly with Ma Cheon-mok at the founding of Joseon. An account says Ma Hyeok-in took Jangheung as his fief, which is sometimes linked to how the seat became Jangheung. The lineage statements here are close to clan tradition, so please check specifics against the genealogy and clan association. It is also worth remembering that the Mokcheon Ma is a separate seat split from the same root. See also Ma Hui-won and Ma Cheon-mok.
Ma Hyeon is said to have founded the Mokcheon Ma and Ma Hyeok-in the Jangheung Ma.
The line continues through Ma Hui-won and Ma Jung-gi. See the Jangheung Ma page.
His tomb was not confirmed.
