Namgung Gye entered office by hereditary privilege in early Joseon; his father is recorded as Namgung U. He was named a third-class original meritorious subject in 1401 and under Sejong served as magistrate of Jeongju and in the Jungchuwon, visited Ming China as an envoy in 1436, then became mayor of Hanseong and later Gyeongju, reaching vice-minister of the Jungchuwon.
He was impeached and dismissed several times during his career. When he died in January 1446, King Sejong sent funeral gifts. It is speculated that a land grant around Dobongsan became the basis of his descendants' settlement there, but this is not firmly established.
