Son Byeong-hui (1861–1922), pen name Uiam, was the third leader of Cheondogyo and an independence activist. He joined the Donghak faith in 1882 and became its third leader in 1897 as successor to Choe Si-hyeong, later reorganizing Donghak into Cheondogyo and leading the movement.
While in exile in Japan in 1904 he organized the Jinbohoe reform society with Gwon Dong-jin and O Se-chang, promoting modernization. As one of the 33 National Representatives of the March 1st Movement in 1919, he led the declaration of independence at Taehwagwan in Insa-dong, Seoul, and was arrested and imprisoned at Seodaemun Prison.
Released on medical parole, he died from the effects of his imprisonment on May 19, 1922, at Sangchunwon in Seoul, and is buried in Bugi-myeon, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. He also devoted himself to national education, taking over the operation of Boseong School.
