The Origins of the Miryang Son Clan

The Miryang Son clan (密陽 孫氏) has its ancestral seat in Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province. It takes as its ultimate ancestor Gurema (俱禮馬), chief of Daesu village (大樹村), one of the six villages of Silla, who was granted the surname Son (孫) and posthumously honored as King Munui (文義王).

The Founder Munhyogong Son Sun and the Stone Bell Legend

The founder is Son Sun (孫順), Munhyogong, the renowned filial exemplar of the reign of King Heungdeok of Silla. According to the Samguk Yusa, when his young child kept snatching food meant for his aged mother, Son Sun and his wife dug the ground to bury the child and unearthed a mysterious stone bell (石鐘); its sound reached the royal palace, and King Heungdeok, honoring his filial piety, bestowed a house and grain. When Son Sun's grandson Son Ik-gam (孫翼減) was enfeoffed as Eungcheongun (凝川君), his descendants took Miryang as their ancestral seat.

The Restorer Son Geung-hun and a Military House

The restorer Son Geung-hun (孫兢訓) greatly raised the family fortunes by helping Taejo of Goryeo achieve the unification of the Later Three Kingdoms and being enfeoffed as Gwarigun (廣理君). The Miryang Son clan produced 38 civil-examination and 125 military-examination graduates during the Joseon period, passing down as a military house with more warriors than civil officials. In modern and contemporary times there are the Cheondogyo leader Son Byeong-hui, the independence activists Son Ho and Son Byeong-seon, the journalist Sohn Suk-hee, and the footballer Son Heung-min, among others.
