Son Jae-ha was from Yeongdong, North Chungcheong Province. He briefly worked at the Yeongdong post office in the late Korean Empire before leaving in 1905 and building wealth through farming, the grain trade, and brewing. Appointed a councillor of the Government-General's Central Council in 1939, he actively took part in wartime mobilization organizations and donated 10,000 won toward the purchase of military aircraft.
