Life & career

Son Sun (孫順) is the founding ancestor of the Miryang Son clan and a renowned filial son of the reign of King Heungdeok of Silla. His posthumous title was Munhyo-gong (文孝公), and he is said to be a descendant of Gurema, one of the six village chiefs.

According to a story recorded in the Samguk Yusa, when his young child kept taking food meant for his aged mother, Son Sun and his wife, in order to uphold filial duty, tried to bury the child but instead unearthed a mysterious stone bell (石鐘). The sound of the bell reached the royal palace, and King Heungdeok, honoring his filial devotion, granted him a house and grain. His grandson Son Ik-gam (孫翼減) was enfeoffed as Lord of Eungcheon (凝川君), and his descendants took Miryang as their ancestral seat.
