Magistrate of Sangju and governor of Andong; founding settler of the Cheongju and Jeungpyeong Goksan Yeon line, who taught students at Anhanjeong

Yeon Jeong-seol (延井渫, 1431-1511) was an early Joseon official, a fourteenth-generation member of the Goksan Yeon clan and the ancestor who settled the Cheongju and Jeungpyeong area. The Digital Cheongju Culture Encyclopedia describes the clan as one that honors Yeon Gye-ryeong as founder and Yeon Jeong-seol as its settling ancestor. A clan summary says he was a grandson of Yeon Sa-jong and held Okcheon, Sangju and Andong posts through the eum system, and the Cheongju Encyclopedia confirms the Sangju and Andong posts.
His life ran from the 13th year of King Sejong to the 6th of Jungjong. He left office and settled in the country between the reigns of Yeonsangun and early Jungjong, a time of repeated literati purges. He settled near Nosan-ri in Hyeondo, Cheongju, where his wife's Jinju Ryu family lived, and built the pavilion Anhanjeong ('peaceful leisure'), devoting himself to study and teaching students.
His son Yeon Tak (延倬) passed the military examination, served as assistant director of the Military Training Agency and was buried at Cheongwon; another son, Yeon Gan (延侃), became magistrate of Sangju. The clan places the Jubu-gong, Hogun-gong, Cheomjeong-gong and Moksa-gong sub-branches under the Jangryeong-gong branch he founded. His stele was composed by the modern scholar Ganjae Jeon U and written by Song Gyu-su.
The similarly named Yeon Jeong-ryeol (延井冽) founded the Yeonan-gong branch as eldest son of Yeon Eum and appears to be a different person; the one-character difference sometimes causes confusion. Dates and stele details rest largely on the Cheongju Encyclopedia, so please also consult local gazetteers and clan genealogies.
Anhanjeong, where Yeon Jeong-seol studied and taught, is said to have stood at Nosan-ri in Hyeondo, Cheongju. Under the Jangryeong-gong branch he founded are the Jubu-gong, Hogun-gong, Cheomjeong-gong and Moksa-gong sub-branches, the main stem of the Goksan Yeon clan around Cheongju and Jeungpyeong.
The exact tomb location was not confirmed (a spirit-way stele is said to survive in the Cheongju area).
He had sons Yeon Tak (military examination, assistant director of the Military Training Agency) and Yeon Gan (magistrate of Sangju); his descendants form the Jangryeong-gong branch.
