Yeon Jun-geol (延俊傑) was a mid-Joseon military official and an eighteenth-generation member of the Goksan Yeon clan. His birth year is not recorded; he is known to have fallen at the Battle of Geumsan in 1592. The Digital Cheongju Culture Encyclopedia says he served as Director of the Office of Protocol and Assistant Director of the Military Training Agency and died at Geumsan in the Imjin War, and places his tomb at Baeti (梨峴) in Mochung-dong, Cheongju.
The Office of Protocol handled the reception of foreign envoys and banquets, and the Military Training Agency oversaw the military examinations and training. Holding posts in both shows he was a regular military official; since his forebear Yeon Jeong-seol's son Yeon Tak also served at the Training Agency, the military strand among the Cheongju Goksan Yeon appears to have continued.
The Battle of Geumsan in 1592 pitted righteous armies, warrior monks and government troops against Japanese forces moving toward Jeolla, and is best known for the stand of the volunteer forces under Jo Heon and the monk Yeonggyu. Sources do not say in which round or unit Yeon Jun-geol fought, so this site does not claim it. What is confirmed is that he fell at Geumsan during the Imjin War and that his tomb is at Baeti.
Baeti was a clan village of forty to fifty Goksan Yeon households until the late 1970s, though few descendants live there now. Do not confuse him with Yeon Jun (延濬, born 1569), from Jeungpyeong, who reportedly refused to submit when captured while fleeing during the same war.
Confirmed: he was an eighteenth-generation Goksan Yeon member who served as Director of the Office of Protocol and Assistant Director of the Military Training Agency, fell at Geumsan in the Imjin War, and is buried at Baeti in Mochung-dong. His birth year, unit and exact date of death were not confirmed.
