Yi Gyeong-seok, pen name Baekheon, was a descendant of Prince Deokcheon, a son of King Jeongjong. After passing the civil service examination under King Injo, he served as Daejehak and Minister of Personnel and rose to Chief State Councillor.
He is best known for composing, at Qing demand after the Second Manchu Invasion, the inscription of the Samjeondo Stele, a choice judged both as a painful act to protect the state and as a matter of criticism. He remained an elder statesman under Hyojong and Hyeonjong; his posthumous title is Munchung.
