윤보선 尹潽善

4th President of the Republic of Korea; first mayor of Seoul

Life & career

Born in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, to the Haepyeong Yun clan, Yun Bo-seon studied archaeology at the University of Edinburgh. In Shanghai he served, at just 21, as the youngest member of the Provisional Assembly of the Korean Provisional Government, helping to raise funds domestically for the independence movement.

After liberation he served as the first mayor of Seoul (1948-1949), earning the nickname the 'cleaning mayor' for his vigorous hygiene and new-life campaigns, and later served as Minister of Commerce and Industry. In the final years of the Rhee Syngman government he led the opposition as head of the fact-finding committee on the rigged March 15 election, and after the April 19 Revolution toppled Rhee's government, he served as the fourth President of the Second Republic from August 13, 1960 to March 22, 1962.

He stepped down after the May 16 military coup and thereafter led the opposition against the authoritarian rule of Park Chung-hee, remaining active in the democratization movement until his death in 1990. He is buried in Eumbong-myeon, Asan, South Chungcheong Province.
