4th President of the Republic of Korea; first mayor of Seoul

Of the Haepyeong Yun clan, he was born in Asan, Chungcheongnam-do. He studied at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, and in his youth participated in the independence movement as a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.
After liberation, he served as the first mayor of Seoul and as Minister of Commerce and Industry. In 1960, after the Syngman Rhee government fell in the April 19 Revolution, he was elected the fourth president, of the Second Republic.
Following the May 16 military coup, he stepped down from the presidency, and thereafter, as an opposition leader, he worked for the democratization movement against the authoritarianism of the Park Chung-hee government. He passed away in 1990.
