An Myeong-geun was a cousin of the independence fighter An Jung-geun and, inspired by him, joined the anti-Japanese movement alongside figures such as Yi Seung-hun and Kim Gu. After Japan's annexation of Korea, he raised funds in Hwanghae Province to establish a military academy in southern Manchuria for training independence army officers.
When this fundraising was uncovered by Japanese police in 1910, colonial authorities fabricated it into an assassination plot against Governor-General Terauchi Masatake, an affair known as the Anak Incident. The case snowballed into the "Case of the 105," in which roughly 600 members of the New People's Association (Sinminhoe) were arrested and 105 convicted, leading to the group's dissolution. An Myeong-geun served ten years in prison from 1911, was released in 1921, and continued independence activities in Manchuria until his death in 1927. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1987.
