An Seok-ju (安碩柱, 1901–1950) was a versatile artist from Seoul who worked as an illustrator, cartoonist, theater director, film director, and critic. After graduating from Gyodong Common School and Hwimun High School, he studied art in Japan and made his directorial debut with the film Simcheongjeon in 1937. After liberation, as leftist figures gained influence in the film industry, he organized the Film Directors' Club to rally right-wing filmmakers, and in 1947 he wrote the lyrics (originally titled "Our Wish Is Independence") for the song "Our Wish," composed by his son, composer An Byeong-won.
Pro-Japanese activities In 1941 he wrote and directed militarist propaganda films promoting the volunteer soldier and conscription systems, served as managing director of the Joseon Film Association — formed under the guidance of the Government-General's police bureau — took part in the founding ceremony of the Hwangdo (Imperial Way) Society, and joined the Korea Wartime Patriotic Corps. For these activities he was named in the 2009 list of 705 pro-Japanese collaborators published by the Presidential Committee for the Inspection of Collaborations with Japanese Imperialism.
