Military commander of the mid-Joseon period; merit subject of the Imjin War

Bae Heung-rip (1546–1608) was a mid-Joseon military officer, courtesy name Baekgi, posthumous title Hyosuk. He passed the military examination in 1572 and served as a royal escort officer before holding various local governorships and naval commands.
During the Imjin War he built warships and fought with distinction at the Battle of Hansan Island and the Battle of Haengju. After Won Gyun's defeat at Chilcheollyang, he served as a vanguard commander under the reinstated Yi Sun-sin at the battles of Myeongnyang and Noryang, for which he was honored as a Meritorious Subject of Military Achievement.
After the war he served as Vice Minister of Public Works in 1604, then as naval and army commander of Chungcheong Province, before his death in 1608.
