Life & career

Bae Geuk-ryeom (裵克廉, 1325–1392) was a military official and chief minister active from the late Goryeo to the early Joseon period. He made his name suppressing Japanese pirates (wako), and set out with Yi Seong-gye on the Liaodong expedition before joining the retreat from Wihwa Island.

In 1392 he played a leading role in the founding of Joseon by deposing King Gongyang and enthroning Yi Seong-gye as king. For this service he was enrolled as a first-class founding merit subject (gaeguk gongsin), rose to Left State Councillor (門下左侍中), and was enfeoffed as Earl of Seongju (星州伯). His posthumous title was Jeongjeol (貞節).
