His courtesy name was Insu, his pen name Chwigeumheon, and his posthumous title Chungjeong. Having passed the higher civil service examination, he took part in various compilation projects as a scholar of the Hall of Worthies and rose to third minister of punishments (hyeongjo champan).
In 1456, together with Seong Sam-mun, Ha Wi-ji, and others, he plotted to restore the deposed former king Danjong, but the plot was discovered and he died a martyr after severe interrogation. Because of this affair his three clans of kin suffered.
He excelled in both prose and calligraphy and was praised as a "master synthesizer" (jipdaeseong). As one of the Six Martyred Ministers he is enshrined at the Sayuksin Tomb in Noryangjin, and was later posthumously granted the office of Minister of Personnel.

He was the only one of the Six Martyred Ministers whose male line continued: his posthumously born grandson Bak Il-san survived and carried on the Suncheon Bak clan.
