Life & career

Bak Won-jong (朴元宗) had the courtesy name Baegyun (伯胤) and was a military commander skilled in the martial arts. He was connected by marriage to King Seongjong's second queen, Queen Jeonghyeon, and to Prince Yeonsan, and from his youth entered official service, holding various military posts.

In 1506, together with Seong Hui-an, Yu Sun-jeong, and others, he rose against the tyranny of Prince Yeonsan, deposing him and enthroning Prince Jinseong (King Jungjong) (the Jungjong Restoration coup). For this merit he was enrolled as a first-class Jeongguk merit subject and enfeoffed as Lord of Pyeongseong (平城府院君).

After the coup he served as Minister of War, then as right and left state councillor, and rose to chief state councillor, leading the government in the early reign of King Jungjong. He died in 1510. His posthumous title was Muyeol (武烈).
