Bak Seong-o took part in the independence demonstration in Seonjang-myeon, Asan, in 1919 and was sentenced to forty strokes of the cane.
The protest he joined — the "April 4 Asan Independence Manse Movement" — took place on April 4, 1919, at the Gundeok-ri marketplace in Seonjang-myeon, where roughly 200 dockworkers and farmers gathered to shout for Korean independence. It was the largest of the March First Movement demonstrations in the Asan area, and turned violent when Japanese military police opened fire on the crowd, causing casualties.
