Bak Gyu-sang, a native of Seogurim-ri in Yeongam, South Jeolla Province, was a student at Gyeongseong Pharmaceutical College when he took part in the independence demonstrations in Seoul in 1919. Returning home, he helped organize simultaneous protests in Gurim-ri and the town of Yeongam on April 10, leading roughly a thousand residents in shouting for independence before being arrested by Japanese police.
On June 27 of that year the Daegu Appellate Court sentenced him to one year and six months in prison. He fell seriously ill while incarcerated and was released on medical parole, but never recovered, dying aboard a boat crossing the Seoho River on February 23, 1921.
He was posthumously awarded a presidential citation in 1980 and the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1991.
