Life & career

Choe Hae (1895–1948) fled to Manchuria after 1910, graduated from Sinheung Military Academy in 1915, and went on to serve as an instructor there and as an officer of the Heungeopdan. In August 1919 he helped Seo Il, Kim Jwa-jin, Yi Jang-nyeong, Kim Gyu-sik, and Yi Beom-seok organize the Bungno Gunjeongseo (Northern Route Military Administration) and, as a brigade commander, fought with distinction at the Battle of Cheongsanri.

In 1921 he joined Yi Beom-seok in founding the Goryeo Revolutionary Army in Yanji, Manchuria, serving as its adjutant, and from 1930 he advocated a soldier-farmer settlement system (dunjeonje) to make the independence army self-sufficient.
