Choe Ye was the founding ancestor of the Saseong-gong branch of the Gyeongju Choe clan and a descendant of the celebrated late-Silla writer Choe Chi-won. He was born in Hwalcheon-ri, Duseo-myeon, Ulju County.
He passed the lower civil service examination in 1393, the second year of King Taejo's reign, reportedly the first person from Gyeongju to do so, and went on to serve as magistrate of several counties including Myeoncheon, as well as in the posts of Ijo jeongnang and Seonggyungwan saseong. Known for his integrity in office, he was named one of Korea's cheongbaengni, or exemplary incorrupt officials.
His descendants formed the Saseong-gong branch of the Gyeongju Choe clan, which continues to this day.
