He joined the Joseon Restoration Research Group in Andong and was arrested for his activities.
Gang Il-won (1923–2006), courtesy name Yunjip and pen name Gaheon, was born in Mulhan-ri, Bukhu-myeon, Andong. The Joseon Restoration Research Group was a secret society formed in autumn 1943 by eighth- and ninth-year students of Andong Agricultural and Forestry School, growing to about fifty members who pursued armed resistance as their strategy. They planned a general uprising for March 10, 1945 (the anniversary of the Japanese Army's founding), but the plot was discovered beforehand and all members, including Gang, were arrested; he was released on August 16, 1945, just after liberation. He later served as a delegate to the National Conference for Unification.
