Life & career

Gang Min-cheom was from Jinju and, though a civil official who had passed the higher civil service examination, was also outstanding in military strategy. During the second Khitan invasion in 1010, as pacification commissioner (anchalsa) he led the local troops and repelled the enemy.

When Xiao Baiya of the Khitan launched a third invasion with a great army in 1018, Gang Gam-chan took the field as supreme commander and Gang Min-cheom as deputy commander. The following year they led to victory the Battle of Gwiju, in which they crushed the Khitan army at Gwiju, and he was enrolled as a Chuseong chiri ikdae merit subject.

He rose in office to Minister of War (byeongbu sangseo), and after his death was posthumously granted the offices of grand tutor to the crown prince (taeja taebu) and munha sirang pyeongjangsa. His posthumous title was Eunryeol (殷烈).

Descendants

He had a son, Gang Dan (姜旦), who became the founding ancestor of the Eunryeol line of the Jinju Gang clan.
