Goryeo general and civil official who crushed the Khitan army at the Battle of Gwiju

Kang Min-cheom, from Jinju, was a civil official who had passed the state examination but also excelled in military strategy. During the second Khitan invasion of 1010 he led local militia as a regional inspector to repel the invaders, and in 1012 he was again dispatched as inspector and drove off some hundred Jurchen pirate ships that had raided the east coast.
When the Khitan general Xiao Baiya led a massive third invasion in 1018, Gang Gam-chan served as supreme commander with Kang Min-cheom as deputy commander. The following year they led Goryeo forces to a decisive victory over the Khitan at the Battle of Kwiju, for which Kang was named a Merit Subject.
He rose to Minister of War and was posthumously honored as Grand Tutor to the Crown Prince and Junior Prime Minister, with the posthumous title Eunryeol. He was later enshrined together with Gang Gam-chan at Chunghyeonsa Shrine in Cheongju.
He had a son, Gang Dan (姜旦), who became the founding ancestor of the Eunryeol line of the Jinju Gang clan.
