Kang Jin-won (1881–1921), courtesy name Hyeong-won and pen name Seongsan, was from Suncheon (Seungju) in South Jeolla Province. He began his righteous-army career under commander Gi Sam-yeon, then trained troops at Mount Jogyesan and joined forces with Jo Gyu-ha's unit, fighting Japanese troops across Gokseong, Goheung, and the southern coast.
After Japan's 1909 pacification campaign crushed much of the righteous-army movement, he disbanded his unit and hid for about a decade in a cave on Mount Oseongsan in Dumo-ri, Seungju. He was eventually captured and took his own life in custody rather than betray his comrades; he was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1977.
