Kim Baek-seon raised a righteous army in Jipyeong during the Eulmi Righteous Army uprising and played a major role in the attack on Chungju.
A hunter from Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi-do, he had organized a hunters' militia with Maeng Yeong-jae in 1894 to suppress the Donghak peasant army. After the 1895 assassination of Empress Myeongseong and the hair-cutting edict, he turned to anti-Japanese resistance, leading some 400 riflemen to join the Jecheon righteous army in 1896 and serving as vanguard commander under Yu In-seok in the assault on Chungju fortress. After a defeat at Gaheung for lack of reinforcements, he protested to the rear-guard commander Ahn Seung-u and was executed for insubordination. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1991.
