Life & career

Kim Bong-hwa (1882–1919) served as a vanguard officer (seonbong jipsa) of the action corps during the 1918 Beopjeongsa anti-Japanese uprising in Jeju, helping to lead the revolt. The uprising, centered on monks at Beopjeongsa temple, preceded the March First Movement by five months and was the first and largest armed anti-Japanese resistance action in Jeju.

Arrested afterward, he was sentenced to two years in prison and died in custody at Daejeon Prison.
