Kim Chang-jip (金昌輯), whose registered domicile was in Suan, Hwanghae Province, lived in Sindang-ri, Jinpyeong-myeon, Yeongheung County, South Hamgyong Province. When the independence movement spread nationwide in March 1919, he had a flag made bearing the words "Korean Independence Flag" (大韓獨立旗) and, with several comrades, planned a demonstration.
On March 23, 1919, around 2 p.m., he went to Jinheung Market in Jinpyeong-myeon and shouted for Korean independence to spread the protest, but was arrested immediately afterward. On April 28 of that year, the Gyeongseong Court of Appeals sentenced him to six months in prison for violating the Security Law. The government posthumously awarded him a Presidential Citation in 2007.
