Kim Jang-yu was the founding ancestor of the Pandobanseogong branch (版圖判書公派) of the Gyeongju Kim clan, said to be a descendant of King Gyeongsun of Silla. In the late Goryeo period he served as Minister (判書) of the Pandosa, the office overseeing households, land, and taxation, and, remaining loyal to Goryeo amid the turmoil of the dynastic transition, gave up office and retired to his hometown of Boeun in Chungcheong Province (present-day Boeun County, North Chungcheong Province), cutting himself off from worldly affairs.
His sixth-generation descendant, Kim Jeong (pen name Chungam), passed the state examination under King Jungjong of Joseon and served as magistrate of Sunchang and Minister of Punishments, but was implicated in the Gimyo Purge, exiled, and then forced to take his own life; he was given the posthumous title Mungan and is enshrined at Sanghyeon Seowon in Boeun, North Chungcheong Province. Another descendant, the Joseon-period Sarim scholar Seong Un (pen name Daegok), is also traditionally associated with the family.
