Kim Mu-seok took part in the armed anti-Japanese protest at Beopjeong Temple, Jeju, for which he was sentenced to two years in prison. The Muo Beopjeongsa uprising he joined took place over two days starting October 7, 1918, when monks including Kim Yeon-il and Bang Dong-hwa led about 700 believers and residents in Jeju's largest anti-Japanese uprising, occurring five months before the March 1st Movement. They first targeted the Seogwipo police substation, and when that failed, attacked the Jungmun-ri substation instead; the incident led to 46 people being imprisoned or fined.
